Due to dwindling fuel supplies, the countdown to shutting down the Gaza power station has begun, threatening a humanitarian, health, and environmental crisis.

In recent days, violence has increased markedly, including an Israeli raid on Al Aqsa Mosque, rockets fired from Gaza and Israeli missile strikes on multiple sites in Gaza. Violence and escalations are likely to continue in the coming weeks, increasing the need for medical aid, food, shelter, and hygiene supplies for displaced persons, and mental health and psychosocial support. Anera’s emergency response comes in addition to our ongoing programming, not at its expense.

February 1, 2023

In the first month of 2023, 35 Palestinians were killed, including multiple women and children. On January 26th, Israeli forces raided a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Jenin, killing 10 including an older woman. Another Palestinian was killed near Jerusalem the same day. This was one of the deadliest raids in the occupied West Bank in years. The following day, Israel bombed Gaza and a Palestinian shot and killed seven Israelis in a settlement occupied neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

On December 25 and 26, it rained heavily in Gaza, causing flooding which was exacerbated by Israeli forces opening the ducts in the dams east of Deir Al Balah. Homes and agricultural lands flooded. On December 26, the Israeli authorities further exacerbated the flooding by opening the ducts in the dams near Khan Younis.

In Gaza, residents still suffer from the damage caused during the 11 days of airstrikes in May. Although crews repaired and reconnected most electricity feeder lines and networks, Gazans continue to experience daily electricity cuts at an average of 11 hours due to the lack of fuel for the Gaza power plant. Around 8,400 persons remain internally displaced, 213 of whom continue to shelter in two UNRWA schools.

Israeli airstrikes targeted the northeastern Lebanese city of Baalbek on February 26th, approximately 75 km from the border, constituting Lebanon's deepest attack since the 2006 war.

The confrontations on the border are the most violent between Israel and Hezbollah since their war in 2006 and have already littered the landscape with unexploded ordnance. The Israeli attacks have significantly impacted agriculture and tourism and displaced 83,117 people in Lebanon. Some 3.1 million people needed food assistance.

Reports indicate at least 101 people have been killed in Lebanon and 409 injured since the clashes with Israel began, including at least 15 civilian deaths. Displacement levels decreased slightly during the pause but have continued to rise in December since the hostilities resumed. Food security continues to be a struggle for many families in Lebanon. Thirty public schools in southern Lebanon have closed due to the clashes.

80% of what Lebanon consumes comes in through imports and 60% of those came through the Port of Beirut, which is no longer operating. Resources will therefore become scarcer and more expensive.
