His Majesty King Abdullah II Meets With American NGO Leaders on Humanitarian Response in Gaza

September 23, 2024 | New York, New York – Yesterday, Anera convened a meeting of non-governmental organization leaders to meet with His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan. The group exchanged insights on how to work together to alleviate the suffering in Gaza and further mobilize the international community’s support. The hour-long meeting was held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, with the participation of heads of Anera, Oxfam, CARE, Save the Children, PQMD and IRUSA.

The current war and unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza have placed immense strain on aid infrastructure, and the needs of the population in Gaza are dire. Anera and the other organizations present, in close collaboration with partners in Jordan and across the region, are responding to these challenges. The magnitude of the situation requires coordinated efforts and the wise counsel of leaders, such as His Majesty King Abdullah II.

“We are grateful to Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania for their leadership in aiding the alleviation of suffering in Gaza and for always working towards peace in the region,” said Anera President and CEO Sean Carroll.

“The enormous scale of the humanitarian emergency requires – and will continue to require – an equally large global response, led by a coalition of forceful state and government leaders, working with UN agencies and NGOs. Like the King and Queen, we are impatient for the changes needed to support the aid response and Palestinians’ human aspirations, and we stand ready to push hard against the political challenges restricting aid delivery and the meeting of human needs.”

The meeting covered the need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, and the need to mobilize international efforts to maximize the delivery of relief and humanitarian assistance to the people in Gaza, to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

Discussions also covered the need to provide protection to aid workers in Gaza.

His Majesty King Abdullah II commended the efforts of Anera and all humanitarian and relief organizations operating in Gaza and the West Bank, and noted that Jordan will continue to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, highlighting the Kingdom’s recent “Restoring Hope” initiative to support amputees by fitting them with advanced prosthetic limbs that enable them to regain mobility quickly.
