Our Youth Literacy and Math Program Provides a Haven From Hardship
This program is supported by UNICEF, with funding from the German Government through KfW Development Bank
In the midst of hardship and uncertainty, Anera's Youth Basic Literacy and Numeracy program, with support from UNICEF, funded by the German Government through KfW Development Bank, serves as a vessel to progress for youth whose education has been disrupted by various challenges.
Mays, a 17 year old from Syria, shares her courageous journey of displacement, struggle and unwavering dedication to education.
"We left our home in Syria due to the war," Mays says. "We were displaced multiple times, and eventually ended up in Lebanon." Having fled Syria with her family eight years ago due to the war, Mays found herself in Lebanon's Bekaa region, even as the country is facing economic collapse and instability.
Despite the upheaval, Mays excelled in school, and was always at the top of her class. However, the harsh realities of displacement and financial strain forced her into an unwanted marriage at just 15 years old.
One can imagine the situation of a refugee family of 10, displaced several times, who lost their home, belongings, business and prospects and resettled in a country on the edge of socio-economic and political downfall.
Desperate to assist her struggling family, Mays reluctantly agreed to the marriage. Forced to abandon her education, she felt trapped and desperate.
After three years of marriage, Mays discovered Anera's basic education program through girls in her community. Determined to pursue her education, she enrolled in the program at the second level.
Mahmoud Abdallah, Anera's Bekaa area manager explains how Anera's team tirelessly attempts to support their students and program participants in a holistic approach.
"During one of the focus group discussions we held with the literacy and numeracy students, Mays approaches our coordinator and asks for medical assistance and explains how she was forced to marry at a very young age.
"We immediately acted to connect her to one of our partner medical centers.”
Anera's intervention not only addressed Mays' medical needs but also highlighted the organization's commitment to holistic support.
"I was thrilled to join the course."
The basic math and literacy program has reignited Mays' passion for learning and provided a supportive environment for her to thrive.
"I was thrilled to join the course," she says.
Despite the challenges she faces, Mays remains hopeful for the future.
"My dream is to develop myself and those around me. My situation is difficult, but I am determined to improve the circumstances for my family and myself."
Mays' story epitomizes the transformative power of education and the vital support provided by organizations like Anera. In the face of adversity, she embodies resilience and determination, inspiring others to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.
